What did we learn this week?

Math
Both grades
  • Continued to work on story problems and coming up with strategies (addition and subtraction)
  • Writing numbers (1-100 for 1st grade and 1-300 for 2nd grade)
1st grade
  • Geometry- Properties of plane shapes (how many sides and corners), making a new shape from other shapes (i.e. putting together 4 triangles to make a parallelogram ), ways to move a shape (slide, flip, turn), and congruence (two shapes are congruent if they are the same shape and same size)
2nd grade
  • Adding 10 and 100 to a number
  • Telling time to 5 minute intervals
  • Finding the rule of a pattern (i.e. counting by 5's, 3's, etc)
  • Counting coins
Reading
1st grade
  • Learned what sound and spelling went along with the following letters: j (spelled ge and gi ), long e (spelled e, e_e), /y/ spelled y, /kw/ spelled qu, /ng/ spelled ng
  • Blended CVC words and words with 2 syllables
2nd grade
  • Reviewed long a (spelled a_e, ai)
  • Reviewed long e (spelled e, ee and ea)
  • Reviewed oy (like in boy), oi (like in boil), ou (like in cloud)
Writing
  • Continued to work with paragraphs
  • Wrote a paragraph about what we did over Thanksgiving Break
Science
1st grade
  • Began to learn about balance and motion
  • Learned about counterweights
  • Learned about a stable position
  • Balanced a paper crayfish on our fingers, balanced a paper arch, triangle and hand with pencil on a popsicle stick
2nd grade
  • Continued learning about plants
  • Drew and wrote observations of our plants
  • Question the 2nd graders are trying to answer for our plant unit: Does the type of light a plant receives affect its growth?
Art
1st grade
  • Learned about Georgia O'Keeffe (1st graders are going to Mrs. Brown's class on Friday afternoons to learn about different artist)
2nd
  • Learned about abstract art
